Dear Sir ...

January 3, 2008 / by johnblogs

I attached something I wrote a while back in my old Dear Sir Segment. Maybe you'll enjoy it, maybe you won't -- maybe one day I'll care.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In lieu of tomorrow being the biggest drinking day of the year, I have decided to post my response one day early. I am very excited to bring to you this greatly stimulating question as it does seem to lend itself to the holiday spirit.

Dear Sir, How does one balance motherhood and alcoholism? Without compromising either, of course.

Dear Proud Parent,

Please remember that when striking a proper balance between parenting and alcoholism, the most important component (as with most hobbies) is time management. You really need to make sure your child’s primary needs are tended to before heading out to “tramp” it up.

I tackled a similar problem not long ago while trying to balance my own drinking habits with the raising of my infant puppy Devlin. I typically left her alone at night with a bowl of chow and water and dealt with the consequences the next morning. Please be advised that this problem worked itself out naturally after I learned to lay down a daily newspaper. On most occasions I found a Philadelphia Daily News sufficient, although I did eventually learn that the Philadelphia Inquirer unfolds to a more substantial size and covers a much broader section of the carpet.

The most important thing (in life) is that you’re giving it your all in balancing these tasks without compromise. Even as I do find your approach highly idealistic, I am one part proud and two parts impressed with your passion and desire to see this thing through.

Thank you for your question and please feel free to contact the attached link for further support.
